Neighborhood Revitalization, Beautification & Support
Bailey Park's revitalization and beautification efforts began in Detroit’s McDougall-Hunt neighborhood as a series of resident-led initiatives. Focused on restoring vacant land, enhancing curb appeal, and fostering a deeper sense of pride and ownership among residents.
Now our work has since expanded across the City of Detroit. Today, we partner with community organizations and block clubs of all sizes—helping to enhance neighborhoods through landscaping, cleanup efforts, and public space improvements that foster pride, safety, and connection throughout the city.
Neighborhood Revitalization, Beautification & Support Initiative Key Components
- Bailey Park Grounds Crew (BPGC): What began as a small team of residents helping seniors and maintaining vacant lots has evolved into a full-scale community landscaping operation. The BPGC now provides services to local businesses, churches, and residents. Their work includes mowing, tree planting, garden installation, and creating green communal spaces. The Grounds Crew plays a vital role in revitalizing underutilized areas, reducing blight, and promoting community engagement and employment.
- City of Detroit Tool Lending Library Partner: As an official partner of the Department of Neighborhoods Tool Lending Library, BPNDC provides residents, block clubs, and community groups with access to free landscaping and maintenance tools. In addition to tool lending, BPNDC offers training and guidance to ensure safe and effective tool usage. We also assist with senior lawn care, alleyway cleanups, removal of overgrown brush and trees, and collaborate on large-scale beautification events like Motor City Makeover.
- Bailey Park Green Space Initiative: The Bailey Park Green Space Initiative is a resident-led effort dedicated to transforming vacant and underutilized land into vibrant, healthy, and walkable spaces that reflect the pride and resilience of the McDougall-Hunt and Poletown East neighborhoods. This initiative focuses on the development of community gardens, the acquisition of land for beautification, and the creation of green corridors and gathering spaces that support environmental health and community well-being.
In partnership with Detroit Future City and support from The Alternative Foundation, we are working to implement sustainable land use practices that address climate resilience, promote neighborhood revitalization, and engage residents in the stewardship of their environment. Together, we’ve planted over 250 trees throughout the community, contributing to cleaner air, reduced heat islands, and a greener urban landscape.
Through collaborative planning and on-the-ground projects, the Bailey Park Green Space Initiative not only beautifies the neighborhood but also empowers residents to lead in shaping a more sustainable, connected, and thriving future for their community.
Through these combined efforts, Bailey Park empowers residents to take the lead in transforming their surroundings—creating cleaner, greener, and more connected neighborhoods for all.
