Arboretum Detroit Youth Job Description 2022
Arboretum Detroit is looking to hire a young adult over the age of 18, preferably residing in the Poletown East neighborhood, for a part-time Summer job: Park Maintenance / Volunteer Engagement Assistant. This job is for a person who enjoys being outdoors and interacting with nature, rain or shine. Applicants must be able to bend, stoop, lift, and use a variety of landscaping tools. They will be planting trees and caring for them in three neighborhood pocket parks and a neighborhood tree nursery. Tasks will include weeding around trees, pruning roots, watering saplings, mowing paths and parks, edging, as well as leading volunteers in maintenance activities. Applicants must be comfortable using landscape equipment and/or ready to learn. Hire will represent Arboretum Detroit in the arboretum and in the community. Perks of this job will be an hourly pay of $18.00, and a flexible 10-15 hours a week schedule April - October. Hire will have access to paid workshops in these spaces and gain valuable job experience. Most of all, hire will have the satisfaction of making this community a better, more beautiful place for everyone. Experience is preferred but not necessary. Wayne Metro just announced: a paid ($15/hr) Green Jobs Training program cohort 2 begins in June and will last for 10 weeks. It is 24 hours / week but should be considered a 'full time' commitment.
No experience required to apply. The only requirements are that applicants have a high school diploma / GED equivalent. The program will have drug screening and background checks and will also require that participants be vaccinated due to the in-person nature of much of the work. This is a very exciting opportunity with options as far as certification options and pathways built into the program, in order to try and cater to individual people's interest.
